The UAE has launched an extensive survey to assess the space sector's contribution to the national economy.
It will also support research and development efforts as well as help draft policies.
The study will be carried out by the UAE Space Agency and the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC) in partnership with other government entities, and the private sector.
Sarah bint Yousif Al Amiri, Minister of State for Public Education & Advanced Technology, and Chairwoman of the UAE Space Agency, said the space industry is among the UAE's top priorities for the next fifty years, and the country aims to consolidate its position as a top developer of space technology.
Salem Al Qubaisi, Director-General of the UAE Space Agency said that commercial spending in the UAE's space sector amounted to AED 10.9 billion between 2015 and 2020 while contractual agreements for space services and applications increased by 40 per cent during 2020.
"Around 3,100 engineers, technicians, and specialists work at more than 80 entities and companies in the space industry in the UAE, and they play a vital role in the survey’s success," explained Hanan Mansour Ahli, Director of the FCSC.
She added that the survey's findings will serve as a true compass for the UAE space economy, and enhance the country’s performance in international competitiveness reports and indicators related to space and high-tech industries.
