A massive data breach has put the entire population of Ecuador at risk of identity theft.

Personal data including family records, phone numbers, marriage dates, education histories and work records of an estimated 17 million people have found its way online.

Cybersecurity website ZDNet reported that there was even data on the country's president and on Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

The breach was first uncovered by security company vpnMentor, who found the data available on an unsecured server located in Miami.

The government described it as a "very delicate" issue and said it is "working on an investigation which will permit us in the coming hours to assess who is responsible for what happened".
