Russian forces have prevented a Ukrainian attempt to penetrate the border in Russia's Kursk region, the interim governor of the region, Alexei Smirnov, said on Tuesday.

Alexei Smirnov said that Russian soldiers and Federal Security Service border forces had repelled a Ukrainian attack in the region, which borders Ukraine in Russia's southwest.

The MASH Telegram channel, which has contacts in Russian state security, said that about 100 Ukrainian fighters had tried to enter Russia in the Sudzha area of the Kursk region.

Overnight, Ukrainian shelling in the Russian region injured at least five people, including three children. At least 26 drones were destroyed by Russian air defenses in the attack. Several residential buildings were damaged by the shelling in the town of Sudzha in the region.

Smirnov said that the night attacks followed a series of drone strikes and shelling incidents from Ukraine during the day on Monday, when 41 drones were destroyed and one person injured, although this has not been confirmed.

There was no immediate comment from Ukraine about the attacks. Kyiv has frequently said that it targets Russia's military, energy and transport infrastructure to undermine Russia's overall war efforts. It also said the attacks are in response to Russia's continuous strikes on Ukrainian territory.
