Popular video app TikTok has been removed from Google Play and iOS app store in India, a day after the Modi government banned 59 Chinese apps.

In a statement issued on Twitter, TikTok India head, Nikhil Gandhi, said they have been invited by "concerned government stakeholders for an opportunity to respond and submit clarifications".

"TikTok continues to comply with all data privacy and security requirements under Indian law and have not shared any information of our users in India with any foreign government, including the Chinese government," he added.

According to reports, TikTok users in the country are able to use the app for now, but new downloads are not permitted.

The 38 other apps on the banned list are still available on both the app stores, Indian media reported.

The development comes in the wake of violent clashes between India and China at the border area.
