Britain has agreed to take back 42 containers of plastic waste that had been illegally shipped to Malaysia.

The authorities and shipping agents are working in the repatriation process said a joint statement issued by Malaysia's environment ministry and the British High Commission said.

"The containers...were deemed illegal as they failed to comply with the necessary import papers," they said in the statement, adding they had arrived at Penang Port between March 2018 and March 2019.

Earlier this year, Malaysia had vowed to send plastic waste back to the source country and get them to pay for the transportation costs.
