Abu Dhabi study finds COVID-19 infection rate drops after second vaccine

Research by the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre has found a significant decrease in the rate of COVID-19 infections after a second vaccine dose.

The study showed the efficacy of vaccination in preventing hospitalisation is 93 per cent, while the efficacy in reducing the need for intensive care is 95 per cent.

The report also revealed that no deaths related to COVID-19 have been recorded in the emirate by those who have received all of the vaccine doses required.

But the study found that immunity is not guaranteed after infection, as an individual can be infected again.

The findings showed immunity is best achieved through vaccination and adhering to precautionary measures, and that immunity is multifaceted and not limited to the presence of antibodies.

The risk of contracting COVID-19 increases as the virus mutates, and the chances of the virus mutating increase with its spread.

It is also possible that the infection may lead to long-term health complications, even if the symptoms are mild.

The study explained that the ‘post-COVID-19 syndrome’ can affect some senior citizens, people with chronic diseases, and even healthy individuals.

Complications include damage to multiple organs, blood clots and others that may require long-term medical attention.
