Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is set to export electricity from a new hydroelectric power plant in Hatta, from April.

MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer  announced that the pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant DEWA is developing in Hatta will begin exporting clean energy to Dubai, following operational tests of the power plant which began in January 2025.

The announcement followed inspections of the plant by Al Tayer on Sunday.

Under the new project, water stored in Hatta Dam will be used to generate electricity. The new plant has a life-span of 80 years.

Posting on X, Al Tayer said: "Today I inspected the first-of-its-kind hydroelectric power station project in the Arabian Gulf region, where we will gradually begin exporting clean energy for the first time from Hatta to Dubai during the month of April.

"The project comes in line with the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development throughout the Emirate of Dubai. The project aims to generate electricity by utilising water stored in the Hatta Dam and a new upper dam built in the mountainous area.

"The station will have a production capacity of 250 megawatts with a storage capacity of up to 1,500 megawatt hours and a life expectancy of up to 80 years."
