COP28 UAE President-Designate Dr. Sultan Al Jaber has called for greater collaboration on climate action for developing countries during his meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad.

He also discussed priorities linked to the COP28 agenda with senior government and diplomatic officials and youth climate advocates of Pakistan.

Al Jaber also met with Sherry Rehman, Pakistan's Minister of Climate Change and Environment, where he highlighted the profound impact of climate change, referencing Pakistan's experience with devastating floods that affected millions of people.

Both countries also signed an MoU to build on renewable energy projects.

"We must build the energy system of the future while decarbonizing the energy system of today," Al Jaber stressed, adding, "This includes tripling renewables and doubling both energy efficiency and hydrogen production. We must also achieve net zero methane emissions by 2030 and deliver on net zero carbon emissions by 2050."

He called for streamlining climate finance access, reforming IFIs and MDBs, and incentivising the private sector to play a larger role in climate finance. He also reiterated the need for developed countries to fulfil their promise of $100 billion annually to the Global South.
