Dubai Metro marks successful 12-year-long run

Dubai Metro marks its 12th birthday today.

The driverless service was inaugurated on September 9, 2009, by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

As of December 2020, the Dubai Metro has ferried well over 1.5 billion passengers.

According to data from the Dubai Media Office, traffic blocks have reduced by 15 to 25 per cent, real estate value around metro stations have increased between 10 and 30 per cent, and traffic accidents and carbon emissions see a notable decrease.
