Close to 200 UAE nationals submitted their candidacy applications on the first day of registration for the Federal National Council (FNC) elections.

In total, nine candidate registration centres across the UAE are now accepting applications for FNC membership.

Officials say 194 Emiratis have already put their name forward for the upcoming parliamentary elections, 67 of whom are women.

Candidate registration centres across the country are open from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm until Thursday, with elections taking place in October.

More than 337,000 Emiratis are eligible to vote this year- that’s an increase of more than 50 per cent compared to the previous poll in 2015.

At least half of the seats have been reserved for women this time.

The exact number will be announced before the start of the nomination process.
