The International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) along with the Naval Defence and Maritime Security Exhibition (NAVDEX) get underway in Abu Dhabi today.

Both events are held under the patronage of the UAE's President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The largest military exhibitions in the Middle East will showcase the latest in global technology for the defence sector.

In addition, they will highlight the importance of developing policies to enable peacekeeping.

Tareq Abdulrahman Al Hosani, CEO of Tawazun, has been addressing the challenges facing the industry.

Speaking at the hybrid International Defence Conference in Abu Dhabi, Al Hosani stressed the need for more innovative solutions, adding: "We are very conservative in challenging the normal. In the past we have identified and addressed the needs in the military domain, but we need to do more than that."

He said the sector should not be afraid to "re-invent" the wheel and embraced the younger generation of employees's new approach.

Ahead of the exhibitions, two Indian Naval Ships, the INS Pralaya and the INS Mysore arrived in the emirate's port. The INS Pralaya will be taking part in the shows.

India's Defence Ministry said the vessel's participation "highlights the close relations between India and the UAE".
