UAE team visits labour facility to check accommodation standards

A delegation from the UAE's National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) has carried out an inspection of a labour accommodation in Dubai Industrial City as part of a campaign to ensure living conditions for workers meet health and safety standards.

The team held individual meetings with a number of workers to ensure they have assess to good living conditions.

Dr. Saeed Al Ghfeli, Secretary-General of the NHRI was accompanied by a number of specialised technical and human rights experts from the institution during the inspection. 

Chairperson of NHRI, Maqsoud Kruse, said the visit is an effort to ensure the rights of workers are protected through continuous monitoring of working and living conditions.

The NHRI launched its first field visit in February this year under a UAE Federal Law, which grants the authority the right to "conduct field visits to correctional and rehabilitation institutions, detention centres, labour facilities, healthcare and educational institutions, and shelters to monitor human rights conditions".

The visits aim to raise awareness and ensure compliance with national and international human rights laws and standards.
