UAE unveils AED 1 billion space cooperation programme

The UAE has launched a AED 1 billion International Space Cooperation Programme to boost space research, localise advanced technologies and empower Emirati talent.

The announcement was made during a meeting of the Supreme Space Council, chaired by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence.

It comes as the UAE pushes ahead with ambitions to strengthen its position as a global leader in the fast-growing space industry.

The initiative allocates AED 1 billion to support international cooperation in space research and development, reflecting the UAE’s commitment to enhancing its competitiveness within the global space economy.

Sheikh Hamdan highlighted the importance of advancing the goals of the National Space Strategy 2031, which seeks to double the returns of the space economy, increase its added value by 60 per cent, and develop national capabilities in research, development and manufacturing.

The new programme is part of efforts to build a resilient and sustainable space ecosystem, attract investment and strengthen partnerships while expanding infrastructure and expertise in line with international standards.

It will also promote a new model for global space cooperation, focused on turning research into practical applications and sustainable industries, while supporting patent development, technology localisation and specialised workforce training.

Officials say the initiative comes as the global space economy continues to grow, valued at around $613 billion in 2024 and projected to reach nearly $780 billion by 2033.

The meeting also reviewed the UAE’s participation in the Artemis programme, which supports international efforts to establish a sustained human presence on the Moon.

In addition, updates were shared on emerging national space capabilities, including advanced satellite systems aimed at strengthening AI-driven space intelligence and enhancing the UAE’s position in space innovation.
