Mohammed Fadel Al Hameli, Chairman of the UAE Paralympics Committee, and Majid Abdullah Al Osaimi, President of the Asian Paralympic Committee, participated in an International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Governing Board meeting, which was held in Paris on Monday.

Mohammed Al Hameli told the Emirates News Agency (WAM) that the 99th meeting of the IPC Governing Board discussed the latest preparations for the launch of the Paris 2024 Summer Paralympic Games, which will take place from 28th August to 8th September and feature around 4,400 athletes who will vie for 549 medal events across 22 sports. “This meeting held a special importance as it coincides with the launch of this special edition of the Paralympic Games, with the participation of more than 4,400 male and female athletes, in one of the largest Paralympic Games.” He pointed out that the preparatory meeting heard reports from the organising committee and sub-committees to identify all the challenges that the 17th edition of the Games might face.

Al Hameli added that 168 delegations, including a refugee team, will participate in the Games, an increase from the 162 delegations that competed in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Noting that female athletes account for 45 percent of the total athletes participating in the Games, Al Hameli said the UAE is represented by 14 athletes including six females. He added that over 18,000 volunteers will participate in the organisation of the Games while more than 160 media rights holders will broadcast the global event.
